Building a transformational culture – how AI powers a learning mindset for troubled times
In times of extreme disruption, as we are living through today, leading businesses innovate to drive efficiency and secure a sustainable, viable future for their customers, employees and the communities they serve. At AVEVA, we are privileged to be part of this process of continuous evolution. We strive to support our customers with solutions that enable teams to innovate and solve challenges in our “new normal” operating environment.
Leading companies are adopting artificial intelligence, cloud and other innovations like digital twin or machine learning, in order to optimize performance, boost collaboration and empower their teams to continually improve operational delivery. So, what is the secret to successful innovation? We believe it’s about building a learning mindset.
In disrupted times, leaders think differently
Continuous learning is about being open to creating fresh possibilities, looking at change for the opportunity it brings, as well as the disruption that must be managed.
This is why I am particularly excited by our recent partnership with Axonify. Together, we will provide adaptive microlearning powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the AVEVA Unified Learning framework, which will be available in the cloud. This means that industrial operational teams can access short bursts of learning at regular intervals. It’s a technique proven by cognitive science to be most effective for retaining information effectively; and it’s just one of the ways in which we are supporting our customers as they develop a learning culture within their teams. I look forward to the developments it will bring, for the diverse industries we serve.
Embracing a learning mindset is also redefining competitive advantage for engineering-led industries. This is because bringing the most advanced technology into a unified data environment enables engineering teams to maximize performance, minimize cost and delay, and ensure efficient plant design, start up and operations. This, in turn, reduces energy usage and cuts emissions both outright using smart models, and as a by-product of reducing the need for emergency rework.
Build a new way of thinking to support continuous advancement
But sustainable success is not just about the solutions you implement. You also need the right partner, advising and offering insight at each step of the journey. And the cloud can also help you scale quickly to support learning and collaboration.
For example, Arizona Public Service (APS), a US municipal power company with operations across 35,000 square miles, came to us when they needed to develop an innovative training program to capture knowledge from their 6,000-strong team, 50% of whom were nearing retirement. Working with us, the human resources leadership team introduced cloud-based, power plant training, enabling their dispersed groups of employees to learn shared processes and procedures on demand, and put them into practice consistently, across every plant in their portfolio.
This cloud-based approach eliminated the need for travel. This saved up to three working days per person, per training session. As the training was on-demand, individuals could repeat sessions multiple times to ensure they retained the knowledge they needed. Clay Goodman, Training manager said, “By using a cloud-based solution, we can provide training at each site so our teams get more time at the control board and less time behind the windshield.”
I am invigorated to be partnering with innovative and like-minded companies to deliver the change that is so vitally needed to drive today’s industry forward. Ongoing dialogue and joint innovation with partners like Axonify and customers like Arizona Public Services help us at AVEVA to push our own learning mindset forward too.
