New Year’s Resolutions: Not Just for You but for Your Mining Supply Chain Too

Mines need to change their way of operating, from reactive to more predictive practices. Digital Transformation enables companies to do this by becoming more agile and reliable, as well as having the ability to go supply chain versus demand chain.

New Year’s Resolutions: Not Just for You but for Your Mining Supply Chain Too

A new year is here and much like your own personal resolutions, the mining industry needs to make new resolutions too—to become more agile and reliable in 2019! Did you know that Value Chain Optimization can be an ROI booster and help improve the overall health of your mine? A couple quick decisions, with the discipline suggested below, can produce huge ROI throughout 2019.

How will Digital Transformation help unify my Supply Chain?

When thinking in terms of value chain optimization, mines need to shift their focus towards becoming more predictive than reactive. Traditionally mining companies operate in push-supply mode. This needs to change.

Digital Transformation enables mining operations to implement a hybrid approach of demand chain versus supply chain and a combination of both. This allows a mine’s value chain to have greater agility and reliability, such that, the mine can more easily adjust to volatile commodity prices, etc.

What does a more Reliable and Agile Value Chain look like?

When we think about becoming more agile and reliable in mining, we are referring to the concept of being more adept to combating everyday challenges and predicting or eliminating setbacks before they occur.

Agility means… Combating volatile commodity prices

Reliability means… Addressing swinging market conditions

Therefore, in running your value chain to address reliability and agility, if you can execute demand chain versus supply chain, you will transform the way you perform your operations and develop a more unified supply chain.

What other advice would you give to committing to a Hybrid Supply Chain resolution?

Once committed to a unifying your supply chain, the best practice is to align your KPI's across the entire value chain. This allows you to address each individual unit of the value chain as well as promoting five key disciplines across the organization. These five key disciplines are:

  1. Planning
  2. Scheduling
  3. Execution
  4. Measurement
  5. Improvement

These five disciplines, when working together, move your mine from a reactive state to a more predictive mining operational model.

Integrating operations management within the unified supply chain allows you to best capture economic and energy-saving opportunities. Value chain optimization is a necessary pillar of the complete digital mining transformation to connect all dots of your mine and create full visibility across all supply chain operations and endeavors. Many companies offer some version of value chain optimization but only AVEVA offers a unified-by-design (not integration) solution.
