Digital Transformation: why cloud and why now?
Last week I was lucky enough to attend the AVEVA World Conference Your Digital Transformation: An Execution Roadmap where the focus was on providing tangible steps to digitalising industrial operations. Speaking with attendees it was interesting to note that while many understood the myriad of benefits of digital transformation - including improved productivity, better return on capital, an empowered workforce - there were still a large number that were unclear on 'where' or 'how' they were going to start.
This is surprising given that our research shows 86% of organisations agree that the digital transformation of their business is a key component of their company's strategic plan and that 62% of the surveyed organisations want to adopt cloud in less than a year, with 26% wanting to adopt cloud in less than 6 months.
What is digital transformation?
Digital Transformation is the key to smarter ways of doing business. It’s about speed, agility and efficiency that drive new and better customer experiences. All while maximizing value creation across asset and operations lifecycles to improve profitability and maximize return on capital.
Regardless of your industry, the digital transformation is upon you. Industry 4.0 is about the digitalisation
of the work processes around your asset lifecycle and your operations lifecycle.
Where to start?
Companies that have been successful on their digital transformation journeys typically start with a business objective and an IIoT operational architecture. This provides them with a clear goal of what they are trying to achieve - whether that's increased yield, improved quality, greater productivity or increased margins. Once the goal is in sight, they can investigate different technology enablers to determine which will have the greatest impact.
The best thing is that cloud, mobile and IIoT technologies are most effective when they augment your existing systems. No need to rip and replace 20, 30 or 50 years of equipment!
Cloud technology delivers incredible flexibility at both a technical and commercial level. This can fundamentally transform business operations and allow industry to take advantage of new opportunities.
How to start?
With digital transformation the key is to start small and start today. The truly great thing about the cloud is that it doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision. You can migrate your data to the cloud for lower cost and improved integration, or keep your data on-premise for regulatory purposes. Or, you can do both with a hybrid deployment.
